Four New Web Sites Demonstrate Caliper Web Mapping in Action

NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS - Caliper Corporation is pleased to announce four new demonstration web mapping sites that have been developed using Maptitude for the Web and TransCAD for the Web. These web mapping software packages enable organizations to add fully interactive maps to a web site, and allow application developers to quickly customize web mapping applications with Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP), VBScript, and HTML. More information about Caliper GIS software, mapping software and transportation planning software can be found here.

Maptitude for the Web is geared towards sales territory and demographic analysis, and offers services for finding the nearest location. TransCAD for the Web is geared towards transportation applications, and includes functions for spatial correlation analysis, transportation planning, travel demand modeling, and routing.

The web mapping service at (http://www.caliper.com/mapservice) lets you create a customized report of the demographic characteristics around any location in the United States. The data used for this example service are from the Caliper Census 2000 Block Group Data CD. You can choose a location anywhere in the United States, draw a circle around it, then give your e-mail address for sending the report. The mapping server computes the demographic characteristics for the circle, centered on the desired location, and produces a PDF report with thematic maps and tables. When the report is ready, the mapping server notifies you by e-mail, and you can download the report. You can customize this service to provide analysis of your own demographic and sales data by geographic location. Contact Caliper at (info@caliper.com) for more information.

The custom web mapping site at (http://www.caliper.com/selectzipcodes) was developed with Maptitude for the Web. It demonstrates how this web mapping software can be used for sales district analysis. You can select one or more ZIP Codes on the map and get cumulative demographic information about those ZIP Codes. The map and the reports could be customized to include locations, color themes and chart themes that show demographics and sales data by ZIP Codes, your sales districts, or any other areas of interest.

The web mapping application at (http://www.caliper.com/countytocounty) was created immediately after the Census Bureau released the Census 2000 County-To-County Worker Flow Files, using the desire line web mapping template shipped with TransCAD for the Web. Desire lines are lines that illustrate on a map the flows of people or goods between points, such as the centers of counties, based on the values from an origin/destination matrix. By clicking on a county, you can see on the map and in a table the number of workers 16 years old and over who commute to work into or out of that county. The counts give the number of workers traveling within or between counties in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, plus travel to workplaces outside the U.S., such as Puerto Rico or a foreign country. The width of a desire line indicates the number of workers, and in a pair of desire lines the outbound line is to the right. Only flows of 50 workers or more in or out of a county are currently shown, to reduce clutter.

The web mapping site at (http://www.caliper.com/newton) is an example of how interactive maps can be used to find a wealth of information about a city or town, organized by location. This particular web mapping site, powered by Maptitude for the Web, reports information about Newton, MA. You can quickly switch between many different views of the same location. The Points of Interest maps contain public and private points of interest including parks, schools, churches, dining, lodging, and retail stores. The Population maps contain demographic data for blocks and block groups from the 2000 Census, including age, race, income, and education. The Parcels maps contain aerial photography, parcels, school districts, and voting districts. The maps include school walking distance data that were computed with TransCAD and topography that was computed with Maptitude. The data have been assembled from a variety of sources, including the local Chamber of Commerce.
