Map of the Month
Maptitude for Great Britain Map of the Month

Each month we will show a map produced out-of-the-box with Maptitude for Great Britain, with a description of how we produced it. This month's map is of London's Hyde Park:

This map was produced using the London Overview map in the Map Librarian, as described in Chapter 3 of the Maptitude for Great Britain manual, and choosing Other Location. When the Find dialog box appears choose Map Feature in the scroll list, choose the Lon Land Use Open layer, and for the field Name type REGENT'S PARK. You can then change the resultant map to suit your needs (e.g. zoom out).

Tech Tip
Counting Point Records in an Area Layer

This month's Tech Tip explains how to count the number of records in a point layer that are located in each record of an area layer. For example, you may have a customer database that you have geocoded. You want to know how many customers are located in each of your service areas.

Introductory Users Solution:

  1. Create or open a map that contains your customer layer and the service area layer.
  2. Change the working layer to the service area layer.
  3. Choose Tools-Geographic Analysis-Overlay. Choose whether to estimate values for all features in the working layer or only those in a selection set from the Overlay drop-down list.
  4. Choose the customer layer from the Layer drop-down list. Choose whether to use all features from the customer layer or only those in a selection set from the Include drop-down list.
  5. Since you only want to count the number of customers, leave the band size at 0 (zero). Check the option to count the number of features.
  6. Click OK. Maptitude displays the Save As dialog box.
  7. Type a file name for the new table file and click Save.

Maptitude creates the overlay, writes the results to the table, and links it to the service area layer in a joined view.

Advanced Users Solution:

In addition to counting the number of customers in each service area, you can obtain aggregated information about the customers in each service area (total sales, average age, maximum distance traveled, or statistics based on any other numeric fields that exist in your customer layer).

  1. Repeat steps 1 through 5 above.
  2. Click Attributes to display the Overlay Attributes dialog box.
  3. For each field that you want to compute attributes, highlight it in the scroll list and check each box for which you want to calculate a value. For example, if your customer layer has sales for each customer, you could check the Add box to calculate the total sales in each service area, the Average box to calculate the average of all customers in each service area, and the Highest or Lowest boxes to find the maximum and minimum sales in each service area.
  4. Click OK to return to the Overlay dialog box.
  5. Click OK. Maptitude displays the Save As dialog box.
  6. Type a file name for the new table file and click Save.

Maptitude creates the overlay, writes the results to the table, and links it to the service area layer in a joined view.
