Maptitude® On-Line Training

Introductory Maptitude: Lesson 3

Themes & Legends

3.1 Theme Basics
  • A method of illustrating the data that go with a map layer.
  • Types of map themes in Maptitude:
    • colors
    • patterns
    • charts
    • dot density
    • scaled symbols

Thematic maps use distinctive colors, symbols, and fill styles to portray data like population, rainfall, sales, or income. The different styles highlight the similarities and differences among map features.

In some kinds of thematic maps, Maptitude changes the appearance of each feature based on its characteristics. In other types of thematic maps, Maptitude displays charts on each feature to illustrate comparative information. When data are portrayed in a thematic map, the information becomes easier to see, understand, and interpret.

You create themes on a single map layer. A map can show any number of themes, and can even combine several types of themes on a single layer.
