Caliper Transportation Profile for ACS 2008 1-Year Estimates Available from Caliper Corporation

NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS (USA) - NEWTON, MA; October 13, 2009 -- Caliper Corporation has made available selected tables from the American Community Survey 2008 1-year estimates, released September 29, 2009 by the U.S. Census Bureau, for users of its TransCAD Transportation Planning Software. The Caliper Transportation Profile is a set of 30 tables that are useful for transportation planning and analysis. The tables include "Means of Transportation to Work," "Sex of Workers by Travel Time to Work," "Tenure by Vehicles Available by Age of Householder," and "Median Household Income in the Past 12 Months (in 2008 Inflation-Adjusted Dollars)."  The files are available free of charge to users and are provided in TransCAD format, removing the burden of file import.

The American Community Survey (ACS) is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and uses a series of monthly samples to produce annually-updated estimates for the same areas as were surveyed by the decennial census long-form sample. The 1-year estimates are averages of the surveys for a year (2008) and only report on areas that have 65,000 or more people. The tables are available for 20 summary levels, from State to Place, including Congressional Districts and 5% Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMA5s).

Users of TransCAD transportation planning software can log into the Caliper User Center at (http://usercenter.caliper.com), then download and install the ACS 2008 1-year data. TransCAD will automatically recognize the newly-installed data. By choosing the Planning-Census Utilities-American Community Survey command, a user can start the Table Chooser for ACS 2008-1 (1 year), then choose the summary level and tables to use. The resulting data can be saved as a geographic file that can be added as a layer in a map, or as a table file that can be joined to existing layers or tables based on standard feature codes, such as FIPS codes for states and counties.
