3D THEME (CYLINDERS) Add-In (beta)

The 3D Theme (Cylinders) Wizard provides you with a method of creating thematic 3D cylinders at the center of point, line, or area features.

To install:*

1. Download and install a free trial of Maptitude mapping software, or use your own license of desktop Maptitude.
2. Download the file 3d-theme-addin.exe.
3. Double click the executable to launch the installation.
4. Confirm that you would like to allow the installer to make changes to your PC and follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
5. Once installed, the add-in can be launched by opening a Maptitude map and choosing Tools>GIS Developer's Kit>Add-Ins>3D Theme Cylinders.

*NOTE: The 3D Theme (Cylinders) add-in works only with latest version of Maptitude.

To Create 3D Theme Cylinders

1. Open or create a map containing the point, line, or area layer upon which you want to build the 3D cylinders. If necessary, create a selection set of the features to include in the theme (e.g., select all the ZIP Codes in Connecticut if you want to build a 3D theme for just the state of Connecticut).
2. Choose Tools>GIS Developer's Kit>Add-Ins>3D Theme Cylinders to open the 3D Theme (Cylinders) Wizard.
3. Make choices on the “3D Visualization Themes” step as follows:

   To do this...	Do this...
   Change the 3D theme cylinder window title	Enter text in the Title edit box.
   Create a theme to count the number of coincident features (typically used with point layers)	Choose Count Theme.
   Create a theme to show column totals stacked on top of each other	Choose Static Stacked Theme.

4. Click Next> and make choices for the Elevation Data Layer as follows:

   To do this...	Do this...
   Choose the layer and selection set from which to create cylinders	Choose from the Layer and Set drop-down lists.
   Change the height scaling of the cylinders	Enter a value in the Global Elevation Factor edit box.
   Change the width scaling of the cylinders	Enter a value in the Global Thickness Factor edit box.
   Limit the number of coincident locations to visualize	Enter a value in the Stack Cap edit box.
   Change the colors of the cylinder stacks	Choose from the Color drop-down lists.
   Choose the Static Stacked Theme fields	Click Choose Fields and follow the prompts. Scaling factors can be applied for each field, and default to the global factors.

5. Click OK. Maptitude creates the 3D Theme Cylinder window.
6. Use the mouse as follows:

   To do this...	Do this...
   Change the viewing angle	Right-click and drag
   Zoom in or out	Roll the scroll wheel forward and backward
   Pan the 3D theme	Left-click and drag

7. To copy an image to paste into other applications and documents, click the PrntScr key on your keyboard, and then paste the image into your target application.

Try it Yourself

1. Choose File>New Workspace>New Map of My Data and follow the prompts to create a geocoded map of the tutorial Excel Sample Customers file (e.g., Sample Customers United States.xlsx, Sample Customers Canada.xlsx).
2. Choose Tools>GIS Developer's Kit>Add-Ins>3D Theme (Cylinders).
3. Choose Count Theme and click Next>.
4. Click OK. Maptitude creates the 3D Theme Cylinders window, showing coincident customer locations from the Excel spreadsheet. 
5. Choose the last item in the Window menu to make the 3D cylinder theme window the active window.
