This map, featured in VOX.com and American Urban Radio Networks, highlights the 16 states where the number of people in correctional facilities exceeds the number of people in college dorms. The prism maps show the rate per thousand adults for the two types of institutional housing.
Note that most college students live off campus, so it does not mean that there are more people in correctional facilites than in college in these states. Nationwide there are in fact more than twice as many people enrolled in college than are in jail, prison, parole, or probation.
