In the history of the Winter Olympics, only two countries in the Southern hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand, have won any Winter Olympic medals. Germany has the most medals (377, including 110 won by East Germany, 39 by West Germany, and 19 won by a unified team), followed by Norway (329), Russia (314, including 194 won by the USSR), the United States (282), Austria (218), and Canada (170).

On a per capita basis, Liechtenstein has the most medals (23.7 per 100,000 population), followed by Norway (6.2), Finland (2.9), Austria (2.5), Switzerland (1.7), and Sweden (1.5). All other countries have fewer than one medal per 100,000 population.
