Maximum Traffic Count in Each State

Maptitude is the best mapping software for business intelligence! Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) is the total volume of vehicle traffic on a highway or road segment divided by 365 days. The map below shows the route number of the highway that has the maximum AADT in each state. In almost every state an Interstate highway has the maximum AADT, and for six states on the East Coast (RI, NY, NJ, DE, VA, and FL) Interstate 95 is the busiest route. The pale blue circles are centered on the portion of the highway that has the highest AADT and are sized to show the AADT value.

California has the highway with the highest AADT (461,000 vehicles) on CA-60 just east of Los Angeles. Other routes with crowded highways include I-75 in Atlanta (409,000), I-69 in Houston (341,300), and I-90 in Chicago (327,900).

If you are looking to escape traffic, you may want to consider Wyoming where the highest AADT is just 33,133 on Route 219 in Cheyenne. Other states with low AADT routes are Montana (44,924 on US-87 in Billings), South Dakota (53,320 on I-29 in Sioux Falls), and Vermont (55,400 on I-89 in Burlington).
