Senior vs. Child Households by State

Maptitude is the best mapping software for business intelligence! Maptitude mapping software allows you to incorporate data from numerous sources into your maps. For National Senior Citizens Day (August 21), we mapped the number of households that include someone age 65 or older for every 100 households that include someone under 18. Any value above 100 indicates that households with seniors outnumber households with children. This threshold is exceeded in all but nine states. The national average is 108.2, and Puerto Rico leads at 173.6, followed by Maine (154.6), Vermont (153.6), and Florida (143.0). Utah (65.6) and Texas (76.5) rank farthest below the crossover point.

Two very different trends push a state above 100. Retiree destinations such as Florida and Arizona gain senior households through in-migration, while states such as Maine and West Virginia arrive at the same place through low birth rates and the departure of younger families. Anyone sizing demand from total population alone will miss the shift, because these two household types buy almost nothing in common.

Note: A household that includes both a person age 65+ and a person under 18 is counted in both totals, so this is a ratio of two overlapping counts rather than a division of all households into two groups.
