Below are solutions for common label issues in Maptitude, including labels not showing, disappearing on zoom out, and resetting label positions:
Labels Not Showing
If a layer’s labels aren’t appearing at all, work through these checks in order:
- Make sure labels are turned on for the layer. In the Display Manager, right-click the layer and select Show Labels.
- Confirm the correct field is selected. Open the Labels dialog box and check that the data field you want to label with is actually the one selected.
- Check your autoscale settings. If the map is currently at a scale where the layer or its labels are set not to display, adjust the scale or the autoscale settings so labels can appear.
Labels Disappearing on Zoom Out
Maptitude uses autoscale to control label visibility at different zoom levels, which can make labels seem to disappear unexpectedly:
- Review the autoscale range. Labels may be set to display only within a certain range of scales. Adjust the autoscale settings for the layer or for the labels themselves so they stay visible when you zoom out.
- Check overlap prevention. If Prevent overlapping labels is turned on, Maptitude may hide some labels at certain scales to avoid clutter. You can change this setting in the Labels window; see the “Using Labels” help article for more detail.
Resetting Label Positions
If labels have been moved, restyled, or otherwise customized and you want to start over, you have two options depending on how much you want to undo:
- Undo specific label customizations. Go to Map>Labels>Undo Label Customizations. From here you can choose to undo changes to label locations, styles, callouts, priority, or any combination of these.
- Restore default label settings entirely. In the Display Manager, right-click the layer and select Restore Show/Hide to reset the layer’s autoscale and visibility settings back to their defaults.
Additional Tips
- Set label priority so your most important features are labeled first when space is limited.
- Turn on Smart Alignment to let Maptitude automatically reposition labels for better visibility instead of hiding them.
Download a free mapping software trial of Maptitude Desktop or use your existing Maptitude Desktop license to adjust these settings on your own map.
Conclusion
Maptitude offers a great suite of label settings to help users customize their labels. Most settings can be adjusted with just a few clicks. For a deeper look at everything labels can do, see the Maptitude “Using Labels” help documentation.
